Legendary British actor Dame Maggie Smith dies aged 89

Beloved actress Dame Maggie Smith has passed away at the age of 89.

In a statement released through their publicist, her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith.

“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday, 27th September. An intensely private person, she was surrounded by friends and family at the end. She leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unwavering kindness during her final days. We appreciate all the kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy during this time.”

The legendary actress was perhaps best known for her role as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series. Tragically, she has become the 26th cast member to have passed away since the films first captivated audiences in 2001.

Throughout her illustrious career, Smith was also beloved for her roles in Downton Abbey and Sister Act, earning a place in the hearts of fans across generations.

Tributes have been pouring in from fans and colleagues, expressing their sorrow at the loss of such a remarkable talent. Film journalist James Crooks posted on Twitter: “An absolutely fantastic actress whose presence will be missed. So influential to British television and film too, what a shame.”

Gyles Brandreth shared a picture of the two and wrote: “The saddest news: the death of Dame Maggie Smith marks the end of a golden era & a truly extraordinary life. She was a great actress, ‘one of the greats,’ and simply the best company: wise, witty, waspish, wonderful. One of a kind and irreplaceable.”

Another fan echoed the sentiments of many, posting: “One of those news you think you’ll never hear because in your heart they’re just immortal. Rest in peace, Dame Maggie Smith. You’ll be deeply missed.”

Tributes also poured in for her iconic role in Harry Potter. One fan recalled: “Will always remember this as one of Maggie Smith’s most iconic scenes.”

Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter, said that she helped him get the part in the series. In an interview in 2011, he said, “Well, she pretty much got me the job at Potter.” If you don’t know the story, Maggie Smith is the reason I’m who I am today. I worked with her on David Copperfield, and when she came to Potter as McGonagall, she told the director, “You need to audition this boy.”

Smith had a big effect on movies and TV shows, and her influence will continue to inspire people for years to come.
