Kate Middleton is known for personally baking her children’s birthday cakes—and she wouldn’t have it any other way!
Princess Kate and Prince William are celebrating Prince Louis’ 6th birthday on April 23, and the festivities might include a homemade cake by Kate.
The 42-year-old Duchess of Cambridge remarked, “I love making the cake,” at A Berry Royal Christmas in 2019. “I’ve developed a habit of staying up until midnight, consuming an excessive amount of cake mix and frosting.” However, I adore it.
The royal mother shared her passion of creating her kids’ birthday cakes with Great British creating Show finalist Alice Fevronia at the Big Tea Party celebrating the 75th anniversary of the National Health Service.
“The Duchess was really curious about baking advice, such as ‘What’s the secret to getting the buttercream so smooth?'” July 2023, Fevronia told PEOPLE. “She said she’d stayed up late decorating the kids’ birthday cakes on a couple of occasions.”
Fevronia took note of Kate’s question regarding how to make the cake sides nice and straight. “I went into teacher mode, explaining exactly what to do because I used to be a teacher.”
An alum of The Baking Show made the amusing observation that Kate appeared to be a better decorator than her husband. Fevronia made a joke about Prince William’s attempts, saying, “The prince’s piping skills were less refined than the princess’s, shall we say.”

During Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge talked about baking and cooking with their kids. One of the happy videos showed Kate preparing cupcakes with Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis.
“Baking cakes for the local Cardiff community to enjoy at a Platinum Jubilee street party taking place today! 🎉,” the couple captioned the Instagram clip. “We hope you enjoy them! 🧁”
Photos showed the royal children busy in the kitchen, adorned with a Union Jack banner, helping their mom prepare vanilla cupcakes.
Previously, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis were credited with decorating a cake shared on social media in 2021 for Mother’s Day in the U.K., embellished with icing, sprinkles, candy, and heart-shaped pipe cleaners.
On April 23, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge continued another tradition by releasing a new portrait for Prince Louis’ birthday. Since Prince George’s infancy, the couple has annually shared a public photo to celebrate their children’s birthdays.
While Prince Louis’ 6th birthday photo signaled a return to one tradition, it also marked a departure from another. The young royal grinned in the sunny picture showing him lying on a grassy blanket (and sporting a missing tooth!), taken by Kate in Windsor. This marked her first birthday portrait of a child in nearly a year. Kate was behind the camera for Princess Charlotte’s 8th birthday portrait released in May 2023, while photographer Millie Pilkington captured Prince George’s 10th birthday photo published in July 2023.
Prince Louis’ latest birthday portrait was unusually released on his actual birthday rather than the day before, a change from the usual practice by the royal parents.
Amid privacy requests as Princess Kate undergoes cancer treatment, it remained uncertain whether the royal couple would share a new picture for Louis’ birthday. However, they decided to release the image to thank well-wishers sending birthday wishes to Prince Louis.
