Princess Anne Represents King Charles on Historic Anniversary

The Princess Royal represented the monarch alongside her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, at the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem in the Netherlands this weekend.

During her two-day visit, the 74-year-old royal was joined by her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, aged 69.

A poignant moment

She was pictured laying a wreath at the foot of the Cross of Sacrifice in tribute to the troops who fought in Operation Market Garden in 1944.

Operation Market Garden was intended to create a route for the Allied forces into northern Germany.

It saw around 1,900 allied airborne troops from the 4th Parachute Brigade jump from military aircrafts into the occupied Netherlands in an attempt to capture the bridges at Arnhem.

For the poignant outing, Anne looked smart in a slate grey skirt suit splashed with navy polka dots. She slipped on a pair of black leather pumps and accessorised with a matching leather handbag.

The royal coiffed her tresses into her trademark bouffant style and added a pair of statement pearl earrings for added sophistication.

Visit to the Airborne Museum Hartenstein

Last night, meanwhile, Princess Anne and Timothy attended a reception at the Airborne Museum Hartenstein in Oosterbeek.

The former hotel served as the headquarters of the British 1st Airborne Division during the battle.

During the event, the mother of two spoke for the queen and said, “Operation Market Garden was going on in this part of the Netherlands eighty years ago this weekend.”The goal of this ambitious operation by both airborne and ground troops was to take important bridges that would allow the progress into Germany. Ultimately, the goal was to end the war within a few months.

 

“The Dutch and their liberators stayed friends after the war, even though it was hard for them in September 1944.”

 

“This is something I saw for myself at the 75th anniversary celebrations five years ago when I was Colonel in Chief of the Parachute Regiment.”

 

She went on, “Unfortunately, the Netherlands had to go through one more terrible winter before they were finally freed, even though everyone who served in an operation that is remembered for generations is very brave.”

 

“As we remember all those who served in the British Army on this 80th anniversary, we feel deeply grateful and humble.”

 

Allies and Commonwealth troops who fought for our freedom and died for it.

 

“Let us also remember the brave people who fought in the Dutch resistance and in defense of their country during the Second World War.”
